Taking Care Of Wood
I am not an expert on the care of wood, but I have some experience working with wood, bending wood, repairing wood, and watching wood expand and contract over time.
The first thing you should know is that wood expands and contracts due to temperature changes and humidity changes. So, in order to properly care for wood items, you should avoid sudden or drastic changes in temperature and humidity. That basically translates to keeping your item out of the sun, hot car, oven, etc. It also means keeping your item out of the water, sauna, or rain forest.
If you do need to clean your item, use a damp rag (soft) to wipe the item down and then when it dries completely, apply mineral oil with a rag and let it dry. If you apply mineral oil and the item dries almost instantly, it means the item has gotten very dry. Add successive coats of mineral oil until the drying is more gradual.
Every month or so you should add a coat of mineral oil. Most items are fairly forgiving, so if you forget for a while, just pick up where you left off and give it a polish.
All our items are indoor items, so don’t leave an item outside or it may warp and crack. Obviously items can transport normally, but it is not recommended that you leave them outside or in a hot car.
Hopefully this will empower you to care for your items and enjoy them for a lifetime. Thank you!
