Item # 18 A Pen
Item 018 is a ball point pen. This pen is made of amazing spalted gum tree wood saved from the burn pile at my local sawmill.
It turns out that the branch collars (the point where the branch meets the trunk) are not useful to the mill other than for firewood. It takes a bit of work, but you can refine this wood into many useful items, like this pen.
The beautiful grain pattern glows through the cyanoacrylate (super glue) finish. The pen measures 5 ¼ inches long and 1/2 inch at the widest point. This unique writing instrument is polished with a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil. The ink cartridge can be accessed by pulling the pen apart from the middle, which is currently filled with black ink.
