Item #24 A Small Bowl

$25.00
Only 1 available

Item 024 is a small decorative bowl. This unique bowl is made from rare spalted walnut harvested from a neighbor’s tree that had to be removed.

I once thought that spalting on walnut was impossible because of the natural juglone in walnut trees that is toxic to other plants/ insects. It turns out that spalting does happen but the effects are limited to the sap wood, which makes keeping the spalting difficult because the sap wood is a small part of the outer shell of the tree.

I was able to use a cut-off of a bowl blank to make this small bowl, but not able to save the spalting. This decorative bowl measures 1 1/4 inches tall and 3 ¼ inches at the widest point. I enjoy how thin this bowl turned out and the unique grain of this spalted walnut, even though the spalting was turned off the blank. This unique item is simply finished with shellac and polished with a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.
