Item #28 A Small Bowl

$85.00
Only 1 available

Item 028 is a small decorative bowl. This unique bowl is made from rare spalted walnut harvested from a neighbor’s tree that had to be removed.

I once thought that spalting on walnut was impossible because of the natural juglone in walnut trees that is toxic to other plants/ insects. It turns out that spalting does happen but the effects are limited to the sap wood, which makes keeping the spalting difficult because the sap wood is a small part of the outer shell of the tree.

I love this piece! Something about the shape of the foot and how the profile looks makes it look more formal than I intended. Happy accident! Unfortunately, most of the spalting was turned off of this piece, but the grain pattern is still amazing because the bowl was made from the center of a trunk section, including the two distinct grain rings. The centers have been treated with super glue and then epoxy to stabilize these sections.

This decorative bowl measures 2 ½  inches tall and 6 inches at the widest point. I love the shape of this bowl and how the shape and the base highlights the grain of the wood, even though the spalting was mostly turned off the blank (you can see a small section of spalting on the foot. This unique item is simply finished with shellac and polished with a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.
