Item #30 A bowl
Item 030 is a medium sized decorative bowl. This unique bowl is made from rare spalted walnut harvested from a neighbor’s tree that had to be removed.
I once thought that spalting on walnut was impossible because of the natural juglone in walnut trees that is toxic to other plants/ insects. It turns out that spalting does happen but the effects are limited to the sap wood, which makes keeping the spalting difficult because the sap wood is a small part of the outer shell of the tree.
The grain pattern is amazing because the bowl was made at the middle of the trunk, leaving two distinct grain rings and distinct spalting on the side. The centers have been treated with super glue and then epoxy to stabilize these sections.
This decorative bowl measures 4 inches tall and 7 ¼ inches at the widest point. I love the shape of this bowl and how the cone shape highlights the grain of the wood and the spalting. This unique item is simply finished with shellac and polished with a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.
