Item #32 A Vase
Item 032 is a mid-large decorative bowl. This unique piece is made from quarter-sawn red oak from a tree that fell on a neighbor’s house. I stacked up 3 bowl blanks and arranged the grain in the same direction. I was having fun with shapes and seeing how complicated of a shape I could make on the lathe.
I like how it kind of resembles a mushroom cloud from an explosion. I used India ink to bring out the grain and show off the medullary rays. I used black ink for most of the piece, but red and some blue for the middle collar and solid red on the bottom.
The item measures 7 1/4 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches tall and is simply finished with shellac and polished with a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.
