Item # 36 A Bowl
Item 036 is a small bowl made from spalted walnut. This item measures 2 ½ inches tall and 6 ¼ inches wide.
I once thought that spalting on walnut was impossible because of the natural juglone in walnut trees that is toxic to other plants/ insects. It turns out that spalting does happen but the effects are limited to the sap wood, which makes keeping the spalting difficult because the sap wood is a small part of the outer shell of the tree.
The crack in the side from the heartwood has been treated with a mixture of sawdust and superglue. This item has been finished with shellac and polished with a mixture of mineral oil and beeswax.
